Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment has made numerous headlines recently and this is often because top athletes prefer this treatment to ensure the recover quicker from injury. Elite athletes like Rafael Nadal, golf superstar Tiger Woods, and many others have received platelet-rich plasma for different problems like chronic tendon injuries and sprained knees. Some have even gone on record crediting the treatment to solving their injuries which sees the treatment’s popularity grow even more.

The mostly liquid blood (plasma) consists of a series of components; white cells, red cells, and platelets. Platelets, in particular, are known for their importance in blood clotting but they also contribute plenty growth factors. In this way, platelets play a vital role with injuries and wounds trying to heal. We at Progressive Pain and Rehabilitation understand this and are using this injection therapy for promoting soft tissue-healing and enhancing hair growth.

How It Works

1

Injection

During an in-office appointment, blood must first be drawn from the patient before being processed through a centrifuge to increase the concentration of platelets. The resulting enhanced concentration of platelets is then mixed with the remaining blood and then injected into the injured area with ultrasound guided imaging.
2

Activation

The injection activates over hundreds of growth factors, collagen, and proteins to stimulate healing and reduce inflammation. The patient might feel increased pain in the injected injured area for two or more weeks but will start to experience a beneficial effect afterwards.
3

Relief

Some soreness, redness, and/or discomfort may be felt at the site of injection for a few days but patients can typically resume normal activities immediately after the pain subsides. Results are dependent on each patient and your doctor’s treatment plan.

Benefits of Plasma Rich Platelet Therapy

Some significant treatment areas where the plasma-rich platelet is being used include:

Platelet Rich Plasma in Hair Growth

Health experts have injected plasma-rich into the scalp, and it acts as a way to reduce inflammation, which can lead to hair loss.

Platelet Rich Plasma in Tissue Healing

After being initially used to help heal patients after plastic and jaw surgeries, doctors started using platelet-rich plasma therapy to heal tissue during surgery. Typical examples of using platelet-rich plasma to heal tissues include:

  • Ligaments
  • Tendons
  • Muscles

Ligaments can be difficult and time-consuming to heal under normal treatment methods. With platelet-rich plasma therapy however, the process is significantly easier and faster.

Platelet Rich Plasma in Reducing Inflammation

Health experts have used a platelet-rich plasma to decrease inflammation caused by osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a condition that makes the joints stiff and painful but with this method of treatment, the symptoms of the condition can be efficiently handled.
