Not Only Athletes Suffer Sports Injuries

Tennis elbow can affect factory workers, painters can get shoulder injuries, and students can develop tendinitis in their hands—even carpal tunnel, frequently associated with heavy use of a mouse or keyboard—is a sports injury. With there being many different types of sports injuries, here’s a comprehensive list with their symptoms which will help you determine whether you need to see a doctor (spoiler alert: you probably do).

Different Types of Sports Injuries and their Symptoms

Some injuries are more obvious than others, so here’s a comprehensive list of sports injuries and their symptoms to know when we need to go to a sports injury doctor.

  • Bone fracture: A fracture is a break in a bone that occurs from either a quick, one-time movement or accident, or from repeated stress. Sometimes, bone fractures aren’t easy to detect by those affected because they might not present symptoms right after the accident (for example, if you’ve broken your rotator cuff, you might be able to go on your day-to-day activities without any pain for a few days), in that case, you must see a doctor even if you feel no pain. The most common symptom is having a visibly out-of-place or misshapen limb or joint.
  • Dislocation: When the two bones that come together to form a joint become separated, the joint is described as dislocated. Dislocations are common in shoulders, elbows, fingers, kneecap, and knee and common symptoms include numbness or tingling at the joint, and limited ability to move.
  • Sprain: Sprains are stretches or tears of ligaments and are common in ankles, knees, and wrists. They can happen while we do exercise or even if we fall down the street while walking and symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, trouble moving the injured area or a popping sound or sensation around a joint.
  • Strain: A strain is a twist, pull, or tear of a muscle or tendon and they happen because of playing contact sports, but also from repeating the same motion again and again, as in tennis or golf. A common symptom is experiencing pain and difficulty moving the injured muscle.
  • Tendinitis: Tendinitis occurs when a tendon is inflamed. A sudden injury can cause it, but it usually happens after doing the same motion over and over. Tendinitis manifests itself by causing pain which increases as we try to move the affected tendons.
  • Bursitis: This occurs when the bursa, a small, fluid-filled sac that cushions a bone and other moving parts, is inflamed. It can be caused by a blow or fall, but also from repeating the same motion many times. It usually affects the shoulders, elbows, hips, or knees.

With many injuries sharing symptoms (mild to sharp pain, swelling, inability or partial inability to move a joint normally, dull aching, weakness of a limb, muscular tightness, bruising, and visibly out of place bones or joints), it is imperative so check with a doctor to determine what type of injury you have suffered and what the appropriate treatment for it is. Early detection and treatment can help ensure that the pain from your sports injury doesn’t become chronic pain.
